A Translator’s Background

Although I had been interested in languages since early childhood, like many people, I only began to study them formally in secondary school, at 11 years of age. All pupils at my school were required to study French for at least the first three years, and also Latin! Later I started studying Ancient Greek.

After school, I began studying Swedish at University, and gained a degree in French and Swedish from the University of Wales, Lampeter.  Part of my time was also spent in Sweden and Norway, where I also picked up Norwegian.

Life then took a different turn, and after a spell running a petrol station, I went into local government and politics. I worked for a couple of years as a professional election agent, before becoming a research officer with a major local authority.

In this job I have had to develop a range of writing skills, and familiarise myself with terminology in many different subjects, from Transportation to Information Technology, Finance to Industrial Relations.

It is this experience that I now bring to my work as a professional translator. So, although I am formally trained in languages, it is the fact that I have combined it with my working experience that enables me to offer this professional service.
